Parfrey's Glen Trailhead is the entry point to Parfrey's Glen, Wisconsin's first State Natural Area, established in 1952. Located near Merrimac, Wisconsin, this trail offers a unique hiking experience through a deep sandstone gorge adorned with quartzite boulders and lush vegetation.
Trail Overview:
Length: Approximately 1.6 miles round-trip.
Difficulty: Moderate; the trail begins as a gentle gravel path alongside a stream but becomes more challenging as hikers navigate rocky terrains and stream crossings.
Highlights: Towering rock cliffs, diverse flora, and a serene waterfall at the trail's end.
Visitor Guidelines:
Stay on designated trails to protect the sensitive environment.
Pets are prohibited to preserve local wildlife habitats.
Avoid hiking beyond the waterfall; the area past this point is restricted for safety and conservation reasons.
Refrain from rock climbing, rappelling, or off-trail exploration.
Carry out all trash to maintain the area's natural beauty.
Access and Amenities:
The trailhead is accessible via a parking lot off Sauk County Highway DL, just west of Devil's Head Resort and Ski Area in Merrimac. The parking area includes picnic tables, a vault toilet, and a water pump.
